Federal government designates $350 million to three national charities in order to get funds ‘quickly to local organizations that serve vulnerable populations’

(April 22, 2020) On April 21, 2020, the Prime Minister announced $350 million in funding “to support vulnerable Canadians through charities and non-profit organizations that deliver essential services to those in need.

“The investment will flow through national organizations that have the ability to get funds quickly to local organizations that serve vulnerable populations,” said the Prime Minister in a statement.

Three national charities were designated as recipients – Community Foundations of Canada, Canadian Red Cross and United Way Centraide Canada.

“We look forward to collaborating with partners, charities, and non-profit organizations via our respective networks to swiftly implement the Fund in communities from coast to coast to coast,” said Community Foundations of Canada, Canadian Red Cross and United Way Centraide Canada said in a joint statement.

The amount of money designed to each charity is yet to be determined, as is the mechanism for distributing the funding to local organizations, and the timeline for getting the funding into the hands of local organizations that serve vulnerable populations.

“We will share more details about how the Fund will be activated soon,” said the charities in their statement.
